Archivist

Definition of the profession

Archivists are professionals of the management of documents, files and information, and the basis of their profile is the management of documents and files.

Depending on their rank, their functions range from integrated systems implementation for document management in organizations (identification of processes and documents, valuation, selection, classification systems, etc.) to the preservation and spreading of the documents and information kept in the Archives.

This comprises all kind of documentary supports and focuses on corporative and administrative documents, produced by the organizations in the exercise of their competences, functions and/or activities. And on documents that testify their activity and guarantee the rights of the organization and its customers and/or users, whilst they constitute documentary sources of collective memory.


Training

University degree:

  • Degree in Information and Documentation
  • Degree in Management of documentation, Libraries and Archives
  • Diploma course in Librarianship and Documentation and Degree in Documentation (both old degrees)
  • Other Degrees related to Humanities and Social Sciences with  complementary training as archivist, through postgraduates or specialisation courses.
  • Information Technology. They must continuously adapt to technological changes.

Labour Market

Public Sector

They carry out their work in the Archives of the Public Administration, such as Historical Archives.
Methods of finding employment: Open public competitive examinations to become part of the Board of Archivists or Archivist Assistants.

Private Sector

Archives of companies and private institutions, mainly associative and foundational ones. Archivists are hired through a labour contract or on a self-employment basis.
