IV INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON CULTURAL HERITAGE AND DEVELOPMENT CO-OPERATION

CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE NEW SCENARIOS OF PROGRESS

With the celebration of its fourth edition this congress has consolidated itself as an unmissable event for all those agents for development who have considered the potential of cultural heritage as a generator of long-lasting and sustainable growth. On this occasion, the organising institutions made a call for the participation, through papers, to help generate a debate on development co-operation in relation with the evolution of the idea of heritage.

The concept of heritage includes complex relations between itself and its regional and social context. The appearance of new heritage categories has promoted a change in the goals for development, which should be based on a balance between the social needs and the economy, the environment and the recognition of the cultural identity and diversity.

Under these premises the IV International Congress on Cultural Heritage and Development Co-operation was held in the Foundation of the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean in Seville (Spain) on the 16th, 17th and 18th of June 2010.

The goals of this congress were:

- To generate an exchange of experiences, criteria and ideas as regards to co-operation development in the areas of cultural scenery, itineraries, intangible and underwater heritage, contemporary architecture, etc.

- To become aware of the existing tension between heritage and development on an international level and analyse new approaches to heritage issues and how to overcome this tension.

- To create awareness of the policies, strategies and the network of public bodies, NGOs, academic institutions, etc. that have started projects for development in the areas of appreciation, conservation, management and diffusion of emerging heritage.
