In the last few years, art and science are presentat the labs of the heritage institutions. This has allowed, within cross-disciplinary research, establishing a prior diagnosis of the works condition, identifying the materials, establishing the performing technique of each artist, as well as to carry out a scientific restoration work. Another objective of the labs is paleobiological research. The organic remains preserved in archaeological sites are a source of information of our past that requires new approaches and new analysis techniques.

Identification of materials

Identifying the materials and the work structure, useful for the preservation processes, to get to know the performance techniques, the origin of the materials and their date.

Anobium punctatum
Damage factors

Defining the damage factors that affect the works, both intrinsic (their own material structure) as well as extrinsic ones (microclimate, pollution, biological agents, use conditions, exposure, etc).

Evaluation of materials and treatment products

Carrying out lab trials to get to know the fitness and compatibility of the possible treatment materials and products for the restoration and preservation works.

Acting as a promoter and encourage quality research in the institute itself and the coordination among centres for interdisciplinary research, improving the management.
Enabling cooperation networks, both at a regional, national and international level, being present in all the existing forums and taking part in the launching of new ones.

Establishing collaboration agreements with different research centres, Esther university departments or institutes of the Spanish Scientific Research Council, in order to promote research applied to the preservation of the cultural heritage.
