Outstanding projects from the Center of Subaquatic Archaeology

In situ protection of archaeological sites using intelligent geotextile nets

This project is part of a collaboration agreement between the Underwater Archaeology Centre of the Andalusian Historical Heritage Centre and the company E ‘AULA 3 actuaciones integrales sobre el patrimonio’. Its aim is to analyse and implement a new technique for the in situ protection of the underwater archaeological heritage.

This is an experimental project that aims at the construction and installation, on an archaeological site, of a polypropylene net with adapted sensors which will act as a protector of such site, both from the physical point of view (avoiding natural erosion processes, the moving of the gadgets and the action of xylophagous organisms on it), as well as from the likely plundering actions that could be carried out on the site. In the latter case,  the net will have a system – called ‘intelligent’- that is programmed to detect any attempt of total or partial lifting of it, so as to directly access the archaeological remains for their illegal extraction.   In the case of a likely interference the system will send -through a transmitter installed on the site- an alarm signal to a central system made up by a computer and a software specifically made for this project.
