The cartographic documentation of our cultural heritage is an essential tool to protect, manage and interpret the heritage assets within their territorial context.

The spatial location of a heritage entity allows us getting closer to the way our ancestors related to their surroundings.
Cartography adds to exact and graphic descriptions, and it is by itself a geoindexed inventory of the Andalusian cultural heritage

The cartographic documentation of the cultural heritage at the IAPH

One of the functions of the Andalusian Historical Heritage Institute is to collect thorough cartographic documentation of our cultural heritage using the technologies of the geographical information.

The whole heritage assets protected by the cultural administration is included in a geographical information system, whereby the IAPH has a thorough inventory of heritage entities that are protected, whether or not they are registered in the Andalusian Historical Heritage General Catalogue.
There are over 15,000 entities included in the geographical information system and you can see their spatial distribution, analyze the relationship with other territorial elements and model the processes that have historically made up the Andalusian territory.
The IAPH has a public service that provides copies of the geographical database to different types of users:
  • Managers of the heritage who need to know exactly the spatial location of the heritage elements to be able to develop an effective protection.
  • Researchers who make studies about zoning from a historical point of view.
  • Companies that develop projects and need to know the tax liabilities resulting from the presence of heritage entities.
  • Citizens who wish to know and value their cultural heritage.
