The territorial scope for action of the Atlas del Patrimonio Inmaterial de Andalucía (Andalusian intangible heritage atlas) is the whole area of Andalusia. It comprises eight provinces and 771 municipalities grouped into 62 supramunicipal entities or regions (comarca) that are studied in three yearly stages that correspond to the initial registry of the Andalusian Intangible Heritage.

In this division of Andalusia there are geographical and historical-cultural factors involved, as well as recent functional and zoning ones. They are supramunicipal entities smaller than the provincial division.

However, this a priori zoning is not intended to be a definite one nor does it intend to condition the work results, but to set the basis to choose a logical coherent territorial unit. This is of course according to a series of territorial features and a relatively homogeneous historical course that have defined them throughout the history until its current configuration within the Andalusian structuring of the land.

In any case, in its division according to a comarca criterion (Cano García, 2000-2002), other supramunicipal territorial divisions have been taken into account, such as those of the Grupos de Desarrollo Local, farming areas, territorial areas of the Andalusian zoning scheme, or legal districts, that are also territorial references for the project development. Ultimately, it will be the research that will throw light on a new zoning, according to the cultural keys this work allows us devising
