Abstract

The Methodology for inventorying intangible cultural heritage in biosphere reserves: the experiencie of Montseny, was a pioneer projecto developped from 2009 to 2011, included in 2013 in the Register of Good Practices of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, entered into force in 2006. The project included a methodology an inventory and some practical ideas about the contribution of intangible cultural heritage to sustainable development. Since then, the inventory in Montseny has been updated and other inventories have been prepared based on that methodology.

At the same time, the implementation of the Convention has led to some decisions concerning inventorying, which were collected in 2017 in a guidance note published by UNESCO. It emphasizes the active participation of communities, the inclusiveness of the inventory and the need of updating, among others. Nonetheless, it seems that globally the exhaustive identification of intangible cultural heritage doesn’t receive the same attention as the nominations to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
